How to Clean a Hearing Device?

Published in Hearing Aid Maintenance 3 mins read

Cleaning your hearing device regularly is crucial for optimal performance and longevity. Here's how to do it effectively:

1. Gather Your Supplies:

  • Soft cloth or hearing aid wipe: Specifically designed for hearing aids (alcohol-free).
  • Wax removal brush: A small, soft-bristled brush (a child's toothbrush works well).
  • Wax pick or loop: To remove stubborn wax. Use with caution.
  • Air blower: To remove moisture and debris.
  • Hearing aid cleaning solution (optional): Use only solutions formulated for hearing aids.

2. Daily Cleaning Routine:

  • Wipe down the hearing aid: Use a soft, dry cloth or a hearing aid wipe every day to remove earwax, moisture, and debris from the surface.
  • Brush away wax: Use the wax removal brush to gently brush away any visible wax from the microphone openings, vents, and receiver (speaker).
  • Inspect the tubing (for BTE models): Check for cracks, hardening, or discoloration. If found, replace the tubing.

3. Weekly Cleaning Routine:

  • Deep clean the earmold (for ITE/RIC/BTE models):
    • Detach the earmold: Carefully detach the earmold from the hearing aid (if applicable - consult your audiologist for specific instructions).
    • Wash the earmold: Wash the earmold with mild soap and warm water. Rinse thoroughly. Ensure the earmold is completely dry before reattaching it to the hearing aid. Use an air blower or earmold puffer to remove all moisture. Some audiologists recommend using a hearing aid cleaning solution instead of soap and water.
    • Use a wax pick: Carefully remove any stubborn wax from the earmold's sound bore.
  • Check and clean battery contacts: Inspect the battery door and contacts for corrosion. Use a dry cloth to clean them.

4. Specific Cleaning Considerations Based on Hearing Aid Type:

Hearing Aid Type Key Cleaning Points
BTE (Behind-the-Ear) Pay close attention to the tubing and earmold. Moisture and wax can easily accumulate here.
RIC (Receiver-in-Canal) Focus on cleaning the receiver (speaker) and wax guard. Replacing the wax guard regularly is essential.
ITE (In-the-Ear) Clean the entire surface of the hearing aid. Moisture and wax can accumulate in the microphone openings.
ITC (In-the-Canal) Because of their size and position in the ear canal, cleaning the microphone port is essential. Check your hearing aid manual for details or consult your audiologist.
CIC (Completely-in-Canal) Similar to ITC models, proper cleaning of the microphone port is paramount due to the placement deep within the ear canal. Always follow manufacturer guidelines.

5. Important Tips:

  • Never use alcohol, solvents, or harsh chemicals to clean your hearing aids.
  • Do not immerse your hearing aids in water or any liquid (unless specifically designed to be waterproof/water-resistant and the manufacturer's instructions allow it).
  • Keep your hearing aids away from heat and humidity. Store them in a dry, cool place. A dehumidifier for hearing aids is a good investment.
  • Handle your hearing aids with care. They are delicate instruments.
  • Consult your audiologist if you have any questions or concerns about cleaning your hearing aids. They can provide personalized instructions and recommendations.

By following these cleaning procedures, you can ensure that your hearing aids remain in good working order and provide you with the best possible hearing experience.
