Advanced heart disease, also known as congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, fluid on the lungs, or ventricular dysfunction, occurs when the heart struggles to pump or fill with enough blood. This forces the heart to work harder to deliver blood to the body. Essentially, it's a state where the heart's function is severely compromised.
