Why is My Heart Vibrating?

Published in Heart Palpitations 2 mins read

A feeling of your heart vibrating is often described as palpitations—a fast-beating, fluttering, or pounding heart. Several factors can cause this sensation.

Potential Causes of a Vibrating Heart Sensation

  • Stress: Stress is a common trigger for palpitations. The body's stress response can lead to an increased heart rate and a feeling of a vibrating or fluttering heart.
  • Exercise: Physical exertion increases your heart rate and can cause a similar sensation. This is generally harmless but can be intense.
  • Medication: Certain medications can have heart palpitations as a side effect. Check your medication list and consult your doctor if you suspect this is the cause.
  • Medical Conditions: In rare cases, a vibrating heart sensation can indicate a more serious underlying medical condition such as an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia), atrial fibrillation (AFib), or other heart problems. A heart murmur, a sound caused by turbulent blood flow, may also contribute to a vibrating feeling. Specific conditions like Still's murmur, a common benign murmur in children, may present with a musical, low-pitched vibration.

Note: The sensation can also be felt in the chest rather than directly from the heart, due to issues like anxiety, asthma, indigestion, pleurisy, GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), or chest tremors. It is important to differentiate these possibilities from true cardiac issues.

When to Seek Medical Attention

While occasional palpitations are often benign, persistent or severe symptoms warrant a visit to a doctor. Seek immediate medical attention if the vibrating sensation is accompanied by:

  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fainting
