How do you adjust a helmet?

Published in Helmet Safety 2 mins read

Adjusting a helmet involves ensuring it fits snugly and securely for optimal protection. The process generally involves adjusting the straps and internal fit system.

Here's how to adjust a helmet for a proper fit:

  1. Loosen the Straps: Before placing the helmet on your head, make sure both the chin strap and the rear adjustment mechanism (if present) are fully loosened.

  2. Position the Helmet Correctly: Place the helmet on your head so that it sits level and covers your forehead. The front edge should be about one or two finger-widths above your eyebrows.

  3. Tighten the Rear Adjustment: If your helmet has a rear adjustment dial or system, tighten it until the helmet fits snugly around your head. The helmet should not move excessively from side to side or front to back.

  4. Adjust the Side Straps (Y-Strap): Adjust the side straps (the straps that form a "Y" shape around your ears) so that they sit comfortably just below your earlobes. Many helmets have a sliding adjuster where the straps meet below the ear. Pull any slack across the back of the helmet. Once you're done press the divider lever shut.

  5. Fasten the Chin Strap: Fasten the chin strap and tighten it so that it is snug but not too tight. You should be able to fit one or two fingers between the strap and your chin. Make sure the chin strap is correctly threaded through the buckle.

  6. Check the Fit: With the helmet adjusted, perform a few simple tests to ensure it's secure.

    • Try moving the helmet from side to side and front to back. If the helmet moves more than an inch or two, readjust the straps or the rear adjustment mechanism.
    • Open your mouth wide. The helmet should pull down slightly on your head. If it doesn't, tighten the chin strap.
  7. Final Adjustments: Once you are satisfied with the fit, double-check all the adjustments to ensure they are secure.

A properly fitted helmet should feel comfortable and secure, providing maximum protection in the event of a fall or impact.
