What two types of cells are seen in anisocytosis?

Published in Hematology 1 min read

Anisocytosis, by definition, describes the presence of red blood cells of unequal size. Therefore, the two types of cells seen are:

  • Macrocytes: Abnormally large red blood cells.
  • Microcytes: Abnormally small red blood cells.

Anisocytosis is not limited to just these two distinct types; it indicates a variation in red blood cell size, meaning there's a wider than normal range of sizes present, encompassing cells both larger and smaller than the typical, healthy erythrocyte. However, when anisocytosis is noted, it's these two categories, macrocytes and microcytes, that characterize the observed size variations. The presence of one or both cell types typically indicates an underlying hematological issue.
