There is no vaccine for Hepatitis D itself. However, Hepatitis D can be prevented by getting vaccinated against Hepatitis B, but only in individuals who are not already infected with Hepatitis B (HBV).
Preventing Hepatitis D: The Hepatitis B Vaccine
Since Hepatitis D requires the Hepatitis B virus to exist, preventing Hepatitis B infection effectively prevents Hepatitis D infection.
How the Hepatitis B Vaccine Works:
- The Hepatitis B vaccine stimulates your body to produce antibodies against the Hepatitis B virus.
- These antibodies provide protection against Hepatitis B infection.
- Because Hepatitis D requires Hepatitis B, individuals protected against Hepatitis B are also protected against Hepatitis D.
Important Note:
- If you are already infected with Hepatitis B, the Hepatitis B vaccine will not protect you from Hepatitis D.
