Published in Hiccup Physiology 1 min read

Currently, there is no known physiological advantage or purpose for the common hiccup.

While hiccups are a common reflex experienced by almost everyone throughout their lives, unlike other reflexes such as sneezing (which clears nasal passages) and coughing (which clears airways), there is no identified benefit to having hiccups. According to current understanding and research, the common hiccup does not serve a known physiological purpose.

Reflex Purpose
Sneezing Clearing material from the nasal passages
Coughing Clearing material from the airways
Hiccups No known physiological advantage

In essence, the occurrence of hiccups remains a phenomenon without a definitively understood function in the body.
