How to Graphite Hinges

Published in Hinge Lubrication 2 mins read

To graphite hinges, you typically squirt a little powdered graphite, which is a dry lubricant, directly into the hinge mechanism.

Graphite is an excellent dry lubricant often used for hinges, especially those on doors, cabinets, or even vehicles, where a liquid lubricant might attract dirt or drip. The process is straightforward and helps reduce squeaking and improve motion.

Here's how to apply graphite lubricant to your hinges:

Simple Steps for Graphite Application

Applying graphite to hinges involves a few easy steps:

  1. Obtain Powdered Graphite: Ensure you have a product specifically labeled as powdered graphite lubricant. It often comes in a small bottle or tube with a nozzle.
  2. Prepare the Area: Hinges can be messy to lubricate. To protect surrounding surfaces like doors, frames, or walls from excess graphite, it's recommended to hold a rag around the outside of the hinges to protect from overshoot.
  3. Apply the Graphite: Squirt a little dry lubricant, such as powdered graphite, into the hinges. Aim the nozzle directly into the crevices of the hinge where the pin meets the knuckles. A small amount is usually sufficient.
  4. Work the Lubricant In: Open and close the hinge several times to help the graphite work its way into all parts of the joint.
  5. Clean Up (Optional): Wipe away any excess graphite that may have accumulated on the surface of the hinge or surrounding area, which the rag should have largely prevented.

Graphite works by creating a low-friction layer between moving parts, making it ideal for situations where a clean, dry lubricant is preferred.
