What tissue type is serous?

Published in Histology 1 min read

Serous tissue is primarily composed of connective tissue.

Serous membranes line closed body cavities and are characterized by a thin lining consisting of a single layer of squamous epithelial cells (mesothelium) resting on a thin layer of connective tissue. These membranes are covered with secreted clear fluid derived from blood and lymph vessels. The key tissue type supporting the mesothelium in serous membranes is connective tissue.

In summary:

  • Serous membranes consist of a single layer of squamous epithelial cells called mesothelium.
  • The mesothelium rests on a thin layer of connective tissue.
  • Serous membranes secrete a clear fluid.
