Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare Your Fermenter: Ensure your fermenter lid has a hole that fits an airlock grommet. The grommet creates an airtight seal around the airlock.

  2. Insert the Grommet (if needed): Place the airlock grommet into the hole of the fermenter lid.

  3. Attach the Airlock: Gently insert the S bend airlock into the grommet. Make sure it fits snugly to prevent leaks.

  4. Fill with Liquid: Fill the S bend airlock approximately halfway with water or a sanitizing solution (like Star San). This liquid creates the necessary seal. Avoid overfilling, as it can get pushed into your fermenter.

  5. Monitor Fermentation: After a short time, you should see bubbles forming in the airlock as CO2 is released during fermentation. The bubbling is an indication that fermentation is taking place.

  6. Check For Leaks: Watch around the base of the airlock where it meets the grommet. If you aren't seeing regular bubbling, you may need to check for leaks in the seal.
