How do you fit a wall mural?

Published in Home Improvement 3 mins read

Fitting a wall mural involves several steps, from choosing your design to carefully applying it to your wall. Here's a breakdown of the process:

Steps to Fitting a Wall Mural

  1. Choose Your Print: Select a wall mural that suits your taste and the dimensions of your wall. Consider the room's decor and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.

  2. Prepare Your Wall: This is crucial for a smooth finish.

    • Clean the wall: Remove any dust, dirt, or debris with a damp cloth.
    • Repair imperfections: Fill any holes or cracks with spackle and sand smooth.
    • Prime the wall: Apply a primer to ensure proper adhesion of the mural. This is especially important for porous or glossy surfaces.
    • Let it dry completely: Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before proceeding.
  3. Mix Your Adhesive (if required): Some murals are self-adhesive, while others require wallpaper paste. If paste is needed, follow the manufacturer's instructions for mixing. Ensure there are no lumps.

  4. Cut the Mural Strips: Most murals come in numbered strips. Lay them out on a clean, flat surface and carefully cut them to the correct length, adding a few extra inches at the top and bottom for trimming. Ensure you're cutting along the marked lines if provided.

  5. Paste Your Wall (or Mural): Apply the wallpaper paste evenly to the wall if you're using a paste-the-wall mural. Alternatively, if you have a traditional paste-the-paper mural, apply the paste to the back of the first strip and fold it over onto itself (booking) to allow the paste to soak in. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for soaking time.

  6. Hang the First Strip: Align the first strip carefully at the top of the wall, using a plumb bob or level to ensure it's perfectly vertical. Gently smooth the strip onto the wall with a wallpaper smoother or a soft cloth, working from the center outwards to remove air bubbles.

  7. Hang Subsequent Strips: Overlap or edge-match the subsequent strips according to the manufacturer's instructions. Continue smoothing out air bubbles as you go. If you're overlapping, use a seam roller to create a tight seal.

  8. Cut Around Obstacles: Carefully cut around any sockets, light switches, or other obstacles with a sharp utility knife.

  9. Trim the Edges: Once the mural is fully applied, use a utility knife and a straight edge to trim any excess paper at the top and bottom.

  10. Clean Up: Wipe down any excess paste with a damp sponge.

By following these steps carefully, you can successfully fit a wall mural and transform your space.
