How to Install a Security Door Sweep?

Published in Home Improvement 2 mins read

To install a security door sweep, follow these steps: position, mark, drill, and secure.

  1. Position the Door Sweep: Close the door. Place the door sweep against the inside of the door, ensuring the vinyl seal makes firm contact with the threshold. The goal is to create a tight seal against drafts and debris.

  2. Mark Hole Locations: With the sweep held firmly in place, use a pencil to mark the locations of the screw holes on the door. Accuracy at this stage is important for a secure and properly aligned installation.

  3. Drill Pilot Holes: Using a drill with a 1/8 inch drill bit (or the size recommended by the sweep manufacturer), carefully drill pilot holes at the marked locations. Drilling pilot holes prevents the wood from splitting and makes it easier to drive in the screws.

  4. Secure the Door Sweep: Align the door sweep with the drilled pilot holes and use the screws provided with the sweep to attach it to the door. Ensure the screws are tightened securely, but avoid over-tightening, which could strip the screw holes or damage the door sweep. Double check that the vinyl seal is still making good contact with the threshold after tightening the screws.
