1. Planning and Preparation

3. Installing the Fan Housing

  • Position the Housing: Carefully insert the fan housing into the hole you've cut.
  • Secure the Housing: Some fans are designed to clamp onto the ceiling drywall. Others may require screws to attach to the joists. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for securing the housing.

4. Ducting

  • Attach the Ducting: Connect the flexible ducting to the fan housing. Secure it tightly with duct tape or, preferably, foil tape for a more airtight seal.
  • Route the Ducting: Run the ducting to an external wall vent or roof vent. Ensure the ducting is as straight and short as possible to maximize airflow. Avoid sharp bends.
  • Secure the Ducting: Use cable clips or ties to secure the ducting along its route, preventing sagging.
  • Install the External Vent: Install the external vent on the outside of your home. The vent should have a backdraft damper to prevent outside air from entering.

5. Electrical Connections

This step can be dangerous. If you're uncomfortable working with electricity, hire a qualified electrician.

  • Identify Wires: Identify the wires in the ceiling: neutral (white), hot (black), and ground (green or bare copper).
