How do you close a storm door?

Published in Home Maintenance 1 min read

To close a storm door, you need to disengage the hold-open mechanism, typically a washer on the closer rod. Here's how:

  1. Push the door open: Gently push the storm door open a bit further. The goal is to ensure the closer cylinder isn't resting directly against the hold-open washer.

  2. Reposition the washer: While holding the door panel open, slide the hold-open washer along the closer rod. Move it towards the jamb bracket (the part attached to the door frame) as much as possible. Essentially, you want to move the washer out of the way of the closer mechanism.

  3. Release the door: After you've repositioned the washer, slowly release the door panel. The door should now swing closed smoothly on its own.

In essence, you're moving the washer so that the closer can fully engage and draw the door shut. If this doesn't work, check if anything is obstructing the door's path or if the closer mechanism itself is damaged.
