How do you change a bed?

Published in Household Tasks 5 mins read

Changing a bed involves removing the old linens and replacing them with fresh, clean ones. The process can vary slightly depending on whether the bed is occupied or unoccupied. Below are instructions for both scenarios.

Changing an Unoccupied Bed:

  1. Gather your supplies: You'll need a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, pillowcases, and any blankets, comforters, or duvets you plan to use.
  2. Remove the old linens: Start by removing the pillowcases, flat sheet, blankets, and fitted sheet. Inspect the mattress for any stains or damage and address as needed.
  3. Place the fitted sheet: Stretch the fitted sheet over the mattress, ensuring the elastic edges are securely tucked under the corners.
  4. Place the flat sheet: Lay the flat sheet over the fitted sheet, centering it on the bed. The top edge of the flat sheet should be aligned with the head of the mattress, or slightly overhanging for tucking.
  5. Tuck the flat sheet: Tuck the bottom edge of the flat sheet under the mattress. You can use hospital corners for a neat, tailored look (see instructions below), or simply tuck the sheet in.
  6. Add blankets or comforter: Place your blankets, comforter, or duvet over the flat sheet.
  7. Fold the top sheet: Fold the top edge of the flat sheet over the blanket or comforter.
  8. Insert pillows into pillowcases: Insert pillows into clean pillowcases and place them at the head of the bed.
  9. Smooth out wrinkles: Smooth out any wrinkles in the sheets and blankets for a comfortable and inviting bed.

Changing a Bed with Someone in It:

This method is used when someone is unable to get out of bed, often due to illness or limited mobility.

  1. Gather your supplies: You'll need clean sheets (fitted and flat), pillowcases, a waterproof pad (optional), and a slide sheet or draw sheet (optional, but helpful).
  2. Explain the process: Clearly explain to the person what you are going to do and ensure they are comfortable.
  3. Put on gloves (optional): For hygiene purposes, especially in a healthcare setting.
  4. Loosen the existing linens: Gently loosen the fitted sheet, flat sheet, and any blankets from one side of the bed.
  5. Position the person: Carefully turn the person onto their side, towards the opposite side of the bed where you are working. Ensure they are securely positioned and comfortable.
  6. Remove the old bottom sheet: Roll or fold the old fitted sheet towards the person, tucking it under their body if necessary.
  7. Place the new fitted sheet: Place the new fitted sheet on the exposed side of the bed, securing the elastic corners. Smooth out any wrinkles.
  8. Tuck the remaining portion of the old sheet, and the new portion of the fitted sheet, underneath the patient
  9. Use a slide sheet (optional): If using a slide sheet or waterproof pad, position it on the exposed side of the bed, under where the person will lie.
  10. Roll the person over: Carefully roll the person onto the clean side of the bed, over the new fitted sheet and slide sheet (if used).
  11. Remove the old sheet completely: Remove the remaining old fitted sheet.
  12. Finish placing the new fitted sheet: Pull the new fitted sheet over the remaining side of the mattress and smooth it out. Ensure the slide sheet or waterproof pad is positioned correctly.
  13. Change the top sheet: Remove the old flat sheet and replace it with a clean one, following the same procedure (rolling or folding the old sheet and placing the new sheet, while ensuring the person's comfort and safety).
  14. Replace pillowcases: Replace the pillowcases with clean ones.
  15. Add blankets and comforter: Add any blankets or comforters, tucking them in as desired.
  16. Ensure comfort: Make sure the person is comfortable and the bed is wrinkle-free.

Making Hospital Corners:

  1. Tuck the bottom sheet: Tuck the bottom edge of the flat sheet under the mattress.
  2. Form the corner: Grab the side of the sheet about 12 inches from the corner of the bed. Lift it up to form a triangle shape.
  3. Tuck the hanging portion: Tuck the hanging portion of the sheet under the mattress.
  4. Fold the triangle down: Fold the triangle down neatly over the side of the mattress and tuck it in securely.

Changing a bed is a simple task that can significantly improve comfort and hygiene. Whether you are changing an occupied or unoccupied bed, following these steps will help you achieve a clean and comfortable sleeping environment.
