Are male and female ribs different?

Published in Human Anatomy 1 min read

While the common myth suggests men have one less rib than women, this is untrue. Both men and women typically have 12 pairs of ribs, totaling 24 ribs.

However, there are some subtle differences between male and female ribs:

  • Length: Female ribs are generally longer in relation to their height compared to males.
  • Rib Cage Volume: The rib cage volume is about 10% smaller in females than in males of the same height. This difference is not fully understood.
  • Shape: Female ribs tend to be more gracile than male ribs, meaning they are thinner and smaller.
  • Rib Cage Shape: Male rib cages are typically wider and deeper than female rib cages.

The differences in rib length and rib cage volume are likely linked to the different physical needs and functions of each gender.

It's crucial to note that these differences are general trends and there can be variations within genders.
