Do we have 2 pupils?

Published in Human Anatomy 1 min read

Generally, yes, most people have two pupils, one in each eye.

Most individuals are born with and maintain one pupil per eye throughout their lives. These pupils function together to allow light into the eyes, enabling vision.

However, there are exceptions:

  • Typical Situation: Most people have one pupil in each eye.
  • Polycoria: This is a rare condition where an individual has more than one pupil in a single eye. True polycoria means each pupil functions independently.
  • Other Conditions Mimicking Multiple Pupils: Sometimes, conditions like iris tears can give the appearance of multiple pupils but aren't true polycoria.

Therefore, while the standard is two pupils (one per eye), variations exist.
