How many organs are in the body?

Published in Human Anatomy 1 min read

The human body contains approximately 78 organs.

While the exact number can vary slightly depending on how an "organ" is defined and which anatomical structures are included, seventy-eight is a generally accepted estimate for the main organs present in the human body. These organs are responsible for carrying out various functions necessary for survival.

Five of these organs are considered vital:

  • Brain
  • Heart
  • Liver
  • Kidneys
  • Lungs

These organs perform essential functions that are critical for life. The other organs contribute to a wide range of processes, including digestion, reproduction, movement, and sensory perception. All organs work together in coordinated systems to maintain overall health and homeostasis.
