How many tubes are in your throat?

Published in Human Anatomy 1 min read

There are two tubes in your throat.

The throat connects to two distinct "pipes" that serve different functions:

  • The Trachea (Windpipe): This tube connects your throat to your lungs. Its primary function is to carry air to and from the lungs, allowing you to breathe.

  • The Esophagus: This tube connects your throat to your stomach. Its role is to transport food and liquids from your mouth to your stomach for digestion. This is why sometimes food or drink "goes down the wrong pipe," meaning it accidentally enters the trachea instead of the esophagus, causing you to cough.
