Where is bile removed?

Published in Human Anatomy 1 min read

Bile is removed from the gallbladder.

The gallbladder, a small, pear-shaped organ located just below the liver in the upper right abdomen, serves as a reservoir for bile produced by the liver. Its primary function is to concentrate and store bile, releasing it into the small intestine when food containing fats enters the digestive system.

When the gallbladder is diseased or malfunctioning (often due to gallstones), it may require surgical removal. This procedure is called a cholecystectomy. Since the gallbladder stores bile, its removal means the storage function is eliminated. However, the liver continues to produce bile, which then flows directly into the small intestine.

Therefore, the organ from which bile is removed during a cholecystectomy is the gallbladder.
