How many nipples can a man have?

Published in Human Biology 2 mins read

A man can typically have two nipples, but it's possible to have more due to a condition called polythelia or having supernumerary nipples. While rare, a man can theoretically have up to eight nipples.

Supernumerary Nipples (Polythelia) Explained

Polythelia refers to the presence of extra nipples. These extra nipples can appear anywhere along the embryonic "milk line," which runs from the armpit to the groin on both sides of the body. The most common location for extra nipples is just below the existing nipples.

Frequency and Appearance

  • Polythelia is more common in men than women.
  • The extra nipples can vary in appearance. They may look like small moles or birthmarks. Sometimes, they might resemble regular nipples, complete with areola and nipple tissue. In some cases, only the areola or nipple is present.

Number of Supernumerary Nipples

While having one extra nipple is most common, it's possible to have multiple supernumerary nipples. In rare cases, individuals may have up to eight nipples total. This includes the two normal nipples plus up to six additional supernumerary nipples.

Are Supernumerary Nipples a Problem?

Generally, supernumerary nipples are harmless. However, in rare instances, they may be associated with other medical conditions. If you are concerned about an extra nipple, it's best to consult a doctor.
