The three types of erections are reflexogenic, psychogenic, and nocturnal.
-
Reflexogenic Erections: These erections are caused by direct physical stimulation of the genitals. Touch triggers nerve pathways in the spinal cord, resulting in an erection.
-
Psychogenic Erections: These erections originate from visual, auditory, or mental stimulation, such as thoughts, fantasies, or memories. The brain sends signals down the spinal cord to the penis, initiating the erectile process.
-
Nocturnal Erections: Also known as sleep-related erections, these occur during sleep, particularly during the REM (rapid eye movement) phase. They are related to brain activity and hormonal fluctuations that occur during sleep cycles and are generally not associated with sexual dreams.
