The Compressor CrankCase Heater (CCH) is an electrical heating device attached to the compressor's crankcase. Its primary role is to maintain a warm temperature for the compressor's lubricating oil, especially when the system is not actively running.

Purpose and Functionality

The main function of a CCH is to protect the compressor from damage caused by refrigerant migration and oil dilution. According to references, the CCH is described as "a fast, easy and effective way to extend refrigeration compressor life." Here’s how it achieves this:

  • Keeps Crankcase Oil Warm: The CCH keeps the crankcase oil warm enough to work effectively. During off-cycles or when the ambient temperature is lower than the compressor's internal temperature, refrigerant can migrate from the cooler parts of the system and condense into liquid form within the compressor's crankcase, mixing with the lubricating oil.
  • Prevents Oil Dilution: When liquid refrigerant mixes with the oil, it dilutes the lubricant, reducing its viscosity and effectiveness. A warm crankcase helps to boil off this migrated refrigerant, returning it to a gaseous state before compressor startup.
  • Overcomes Compressor Burnout: By preventing oil dilution and ensuring proper lubrication, the CCH "overcomes one of the leading causes of compressor burnout."
