How Do I Turn Off the Oil Heater?

Published in HVAC Systems 1 min read

To turn off your oil heater completely, follow these steps:

  1. Lower the Thermostat: Set the thermostat to its lowest setting. This signals the heater to stop producing heat.

  2. Wait for the Heating Cycle to Stop: Allow the furnace to complete its current heating cycle and shut down on its own. This ensures the burner has fully extinguished.

  3. Turn Off the Furnace Power Switch: Locate the power switch for the furnace (usually a standard light switch located on or near the unit) and turn it to the "Off" position. This disconnects the furnace from its electrical power source.

  4. Shut Off the Oil Tank Valve: Find the fuel shutoff valve on the oil tank. Twist this valve clockwise until it is completely closed. This stops the flow of oil to the furnace.

By following these steps, you'll ensure your oil heater is safely and completely turned off.
