How do I move storage to iCloud?

Published in iCloud Storage 2 mins read

To move your photos and videos to iCloud, freeing up space on your device, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings: Tap the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Access iCloud Settings: Tap on your name at the top of the Settings menu, then tap "iCloud."

  3. Navigate to Photos: Tap on "Photos."

  4. Enable iCloud Photos:

    • If you see "Sync this iPhone" (or iPad), tap it.
    • In iOS 15 or earlier, toggle the switch to turn on "iCloud Photos."
  5. Choose Storage Optimization: Select "Optimize iPhone Storage" to save space on your device by storing smaller, optimized versions of your photos and videos on your device while keeping the full-resolution originals in iCloud. If you want to keep the full resolution files on your device as well as iCloud, choose "Download and Keep Originals." Note: this option uses much more local storage.

By enabling "iCloud Photos" and selecting "Optimize iPhone Storage," your device will automatically upload your photos and videos to iCloud. Over time, as your device's storage fills up, it will replace the full-resolution versions with smaller, optimized versions, saving space while ensuring your originals are safely stored in iCloud.
