How to Store Data in iCloud

Published in iCloud Storage 3 mins read

Storing data in iCloud is straightforward and offers seamless integration across Apple devices. Here's how you can utilize iCloud's storage capabilities:

Storing Files in iCloud Drive

iCloud Drive is the primary method for storing files in iCloud. This allows you to access your documents, photos, and other files from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and even your PC (via iCloud for Windows).

Steps to enable iCloud Drive on your Mac:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Click on your name at the top of the sidebar.
  3. Select iCloud.
  4. Ensure iCloud Drive is turned on.
  5. Optionally, turn on Desktop & Documents Folders to sync these folders to iCloud. This automatically saves the files in these folders to iCloud.
  6. Click Done.

Accessing Files: You can access files stored in iCloud Drive through the Finder on your Mac, the Files app on your iOS devices, and the iCloud website (https://www.icloud.com/).

Managing iCloud Storage

iCloud provides 5GB of free storage initially. You can monitor and manage your storage usage through the iCloud website (https://www.icloud.com/storage/) or within your device's settings. You can upgrade your storage plan if you need more space. To manage your storage:

  • Check Usage: Log in to iCloud.com to view your iCloud storage usage and your family's usage.
  • Upgrade Storage: If you run out of space, you can upgrade to a paid iCloud+ plan offering greater storage capacity.
  • Manage Apps: You can manage which app data is backed up to iCloud, helping to free up space. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Storage to control this.

Deleting App Data

Sometimes, you may want to delete app data stored in iCloud to reclaim space. This can be done through the iCloud settings on your device or through the website's Manage Storage section. Note that the methods for deleting app data vary depending on the specific app. Some apps allow direct deletion within their settings, while others may require using the "Manage Storage" section to delete Documents & Data.

Note: Apps themselves don't take up space in your iCloud storage; rather, the data within the apps does. Your app purchases are stored separately and do not count against your storage quota. (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5273453)

iCloud Backup

iCloud also backs up your device's data, including settings, app data, and photos. While this is a separate function from iCloud Drive, it's a vital part of protecting your information. Managing app backups in your iCloud settings allows for customized storage management.
