How to Wear Ihram During Tawaf?

Published in Ihram Tawaf Wear 3 mins read

During Tawaf, specifically for men, the upper garment of the Ihram (Rida) is worn in a particular manner called Idtiba'.

Wearing Ihram correctly for Tawaf involves a specific method for the upper garment, the Rida, especially for men performing the first Tawaf of Umrah or Hajj.

Here’s how it's done, incorporating the details from the reference:

  • For the first three rounds of Tawaf: You wear the Rida such that your right shoulder is exposed. This is achieved by passing the Rida under your right armpit and draping both ends over your left shoulder. As the reference notes, your arm is "still open" in this posture during these initial rounds.
  • For the other four rounds (rounds 4 to 7): You continue this posture with your right shoulder exposed. The reference specifies that your arm is "still open but only for tawaf".
  • After completing Tawaf: You revert to the standard way of wearing the Rida, covering both shoulders. The reference states, "after tawaf you cover it back again. And you're totally covered for the rest of your umrah."

This practice of exposing the right shoulder during Tawaf is known as Idtiba'. It is specifically recommended for men during the Tawaf of arrival (Tawaf al-Qudum) in Hajj and the Tawaf of Umrah, and it is maintained throughout all seven circuits. After completing Tawaf, one should return to the normal covering of both shoulders.

Steps for Idtiba' (Wearing Ihram During Tawaf - Men):

  1. Ensure you are already in the Ihram state.
  2. Take the upper garment (Rida).
  3. Pass one end of the Rida under your right armpit.
  4. Drape the remaining part of the Rida over your left shoulder, so both ends hang over the left side of your chest/back.
  5. Your right shoulder and arm will now be exposed.
  6. Maintain this posture throughout all seven rounds of Tawaf.
  7. Upon finishing Tawaf, adjust the Rida to cover both shoulders normally.

Summary Table:

Action Ihram Rida Posture (Men) Applies During Reference Point
Performing Tawaf Rounds 1-3 Right shoulder exposed (Idtiba') Tawaf "For the first three rounds of tawaf. And for the other four rounds your arm is still open..."
Performing Tawaf Rounds 4-7 Right shoulder exposed (Idtiba') Tawaf "...arm is still open but only for tawaf"
After Completing Tawaf Both shoulders covered (standard Ihram wear) Rest of Umrah/Hajj "after tawaf you cover it back again. And you're totally covered for the rest of your umrah."

This specific way of wearing the Ihram during Tawaf is a Sunnah (recommended practice) for men and is part of completing the rituals correctly.
