How do you Make an object guide in Illustrator?

Published in Illustrator Guides 2 mins read

To make an object a guide in Adobe Illustrator, you can easily convert any selected vector path into a guide.

Steps to Convert an Object to a Guide

Converting a vector object into a guide helps align other elements in your artwork precisely. Follow these simple steps:

  1. Draw or Select Your Object: First, you need a vector object. You can draw a vector using the Pen tool or select an existing one. Any path, shape, or text outline can be used.
  2. Select the Vector: Use the Selection tool (the black arrow) to click directly on the vector object you want to turn into a guide.
  3. Apply Make Guides: With the object selected, go to the View menu at the top of the screen. Navigate to Guides and then select Make Guides.

Once selected, your vector object will transform into a non-printing guide line, typically appearing as cyan lines (unless you've changed your guide preferences).

Understanding Object Guides

Unlike standard ruler guides dragged from the rulers, object guides can follow any shape. This is incredibly useful for aligning objects along curves, diagonal lines, or irregular paths.

Remember, guides can be locked (View > Guides > Lock Guides) to prevent accidental movement and hidden (View > Guides > Hide Guides) when you don't need them visible.
