To reorder layers in Adobe Illustrator, you simply drag and drop them within the Layers panel. This changes their stacking order, affecting which objects appear in front of or behind others in your artwork.

Understanding Layer Order

The order of layers in the Layers panel determines the stacking order of all objects contained within them. Layers higher up in the panel are positioned in front of layers lower down. As the reference mentions, if objects on a layer are currently on top of everything, and you want them behind other elements, you need to change the layer's position in the stacking order.

Steps to Reorder Layers

Reordering layers is a quick process:

  1. Open the Layers Panel: If your Layers panel is not visible, go to Window > Layers.
  2. Locate the Layer: Find the layer you want to move in the Layers panel. Layers are listed from top to bottom, representing front to back in your artwork.
  3. Drag and Drop: Click and hold the layer's name or the colored selection indicator next to it. Drag the layer upwards or downwards in the panel. You will see a bold line indicating where the layer will be placed when you release the mouse button.
  4. Release: Release the mouse button when the bold line is in the desired position.

The layer, and all objects on it, will instantly move to the new stacking position.

Example:

Imagine you have three layers:

  • Layer 3 (Top) - Contains text
  • Layer 2 (Middle) - Contains shapes
  • Layer 1 (Bottom) - Contains a background image

If you drag Layer 1 (Background) above Layer 2 (Shapes), the Shapes layer will now be behind the Background layer, and the text will still be on top of both.

Tips for Managing Layers

  • Name Layers: Give layers descriptive names (e.g., "Background Image", "Product Shots", "Text Overlays") to make them easy to identify and reorder.
  • Group Objects: Keep related objects on the same layer or within sublayers to manage complexity.
  • Lock Layers: Lock layers (Cmd+L or Ctrl+L or click the lock icon in the Layers panel) you are not currently working on to prevent accidentally selecting or moving objects.
  • Visibility: Toggle layer visibility by clicking the eye icon in the Layers panel (Cmd+, or Ctrl+,).
