How do you Make a Mask in Illustrator?

Published in Illustrator Masking 3 mins read

To create a mask in Adobe Illustrator, you use a shape to define which parts of your artwork are visible. Artwork inside the shape will be seen, and artwork outside it will be hidden. Here's how to do it:

Steps to Create a Clipping Mask

  1. Prepare your Artwork and Mask:
    • Create the artwork you wish to mask. This can include any objects, text, or images.
    • Draw a new shape using any of the shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, etc.) or leverage an existing shape that you wish to use as a mask. This shape will determine what part of your artwork is visible.
  2. Position the Mask:
    • Make sure the mask shape is positioned above the artwork you want to mask. In Illustrator, the mask object must be on top of the artwork layers.
  3. Apply the Mask:
    • Select both the mask shape and the artwork you want to mask.
    • Go to the menu bar and choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make.

Once you apply the mask, only the parts of your artwork that fall within the boundaries of the mask shape will remain visible.

Practical Example

Let's say you have a colorful gradient background and you want it to appear only inside a star shape.

  • First, you draw your gradient.
  • Next, you draw a star shape above the gradient.
  • Then, you select both the star and the gradient.
  • Finally, you choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make. The gradient is now only visible within the star.

Key Considerations

  • The shape you use as a mask has no stroke or fill, but the masked objects retain their individual properties.
  • You can adjust the mask by selecting and manipulating the mask shape, which will re-define the visibility of the artwork.
  • To release a mask, select the masked group and go to Object > Clipping Mask > Release.
