How do you duplicate a clipping mask in Illustrator?

You can duplicate a clipping mask in Illustrator by copying it and then applying it to another object.

Copying the Clipping Mask

To copy a clipping mask, you have two primary options:

  • Using the Dropdown Menu: Select the clipping mask and navigate to the "Edit" menu. From the dropdown, choose "Copy".
  • Using Keyboard Shortcuts: You can use the following keyboard shortcuts for quick copying:
    • Windows: Press Ctrl + C
    • Mac: Press Command + C

Applying the Copied Clipping Mask

Once you have copied the clipping mask, you can apply it to another object:

  1. Select the target object: Choose the object that you want to apply the clipping mask to.
  2. Apply the copied mask:
    • Navigate to "Edit" menu.
    • Select "Paste" to paste the clipping mask on top of the selected object.
    • Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts to paste the mask:
      • Windows: Press Ctrl + V
      • Mac: Press Command + V

The copied clipping mask will then be applied to the selected object.

Practical Insights

  • Multiple Applications: You can paste the same clipping mask onto multiple objects after copying it once.
  • Preservation of Content: Copying the clipping mask only copies the mask shape. The content within the original mask is not copied.
