To mesh an object in Illustrator, you use the Mesh tool to create a gradient mesh, which allows for complex color blending and distortion within the object.
Here's how to get started with meshing an object:
Steps to Mesh an Object
Creating a mesh involves a few simple steps using the dedicated tool.
- Select the Object: First, make sure the object you want to mesh is selected on your artboard.
- Select the Mesh Tool: Go to the Tools panel and select the Mesh tool (it looks like a grid). The shortcut is 'U'.
- Click Inside the Object: Click inside it, usually near the center. This action adds an initial horizontal and a vertical mesh line to your object.
Adding More Mesh Lines
Once you have the initial mesh lines, you aren't limited to just one intersection. You can add more complexity:
- Click on Existing Lines: We can then add more by clicking on either of those existing mesh lines (horizontal or vertical). Each click adds a new line intersecting the existing one.
- Click Anywhere Else: You can also click anywhere within the object's fill to add a new mesh point with both horizontal and vertical lines intersecting at that spot.
What Happens When You Mesh?
When you apply a mesh to an object, its appearance changes significantly.
- The object is converted into a gradient mesh object.
- Mesh lines and mesh points appear on the object.
- These points and lines act like handles that you can manipulate to change the object's shape and apply different colors to different areas.
- Moving mesh points with the Direct Selection tool (A) can distort the object.
- Selecting mesh points or lines allows you to apply colors, creating smooth gradients across the mesh patches.
Using the Mesh tool is a powerful way to create realistic lighting effects, complex blends, and unique distortions directly within a vector object. It transforms a simple shape into a flexible canvas for detailed work.
