Published in Illustrator Object Rotation 3 mins read

You can rotate an arc in Illustrator using several methods, including the Rotate Tool, the Transform panel, or by manipulating its bounding box.

Rotating an object like an arc in Illustrator is a common task for adjusting its orientation within your design. Whether you need a precise angle or a visual adjustment, Illustrator provides flexible tools for this purpose.

Methods for Rotating an Arc

Here are the primary ways to rotate an arc in Adobe Illustrator:

  1. Using the Selection Tool and Bounding Box:

    • Select the arc using the Selection Tool (V).
    • Hover your cursor just outside one of the corner handles of the bounding box that appears around the arc.
    • The cursor will change to a curved double arrow.
    • Click and drag to rotate the arc.
    • Tip: Holding down the Shift key while dragging will snap the rotation to preset increments, such as 45-degree increments, as seen in the provided reference.
  2. Using the Rotate Tool:

    • Select the arc.
    • Choose the Rotate Tool (R) from the toolbar.
    • Click once anywhere on the artboard to set the rotation pivot point (the point around which the arc will rotate). By default, it rotates around the object's center.
    • Click and drag to rotate the arc around the set pivot point.
    • For Precise Rotation:
      • Select the arc.
      • Choose the Rotate Tool (R).
      • Hold down the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (macOS) and click on the artboard where you want the pivot point to be. This action opens the Rotate dialog box.
      • In the dialog box, enter a specific Angle value for rotation, as mentioned in the reference for rotating based on a specific numerical value.
      • You can preview the rotation before applying it.
      • Click OK to apply the rotation or Copy to create a rotated duplicate.
  3. Using the Transform Panel:

    • Select the arc.
    • Open the Transform panel (Window > Transform).
    • Locate the Rotate field (often indicated by an angle icon).
    • Enter a specific angle value in the field.
    • Press Enter or Return to apply the rotation.
    • You can also select from preset angles in the dropdown menu next to the field.
    • Ensure the desired reference point (the point around which the rotation occurs) is selected in the 9-point grid icon within the panel.

Each method offers different levels of control, from quick visual adjustments using the bounding box to precise numerical rotations via the dialog box or Transform panel.
