How to Reduce Line Size in Illustrator

Published in Illustrator Stroke Control 4 mins read

Reducing the size or thickness of a line (known as the stroke weight) in Adobe Illustrator is a fundamental task you can accomplish easily through several methods.

The most common way to reduce line size is by adjusting the Stroke Weight setting for the selected path or object.

Methods to Reduce Line Size (Stroke Weight)

Here are the primary ways to control and decrease the thickness of your lines in Illustrator:

1. Using the Stroke Panel

The Stroke panel offers comprehensive controls for line attributes.

  • Steps:
    1. Select the path(s) or object(s) whose line size you want to change.
    2. Go to the menu: Window > Stroke to open the Stroke panel.
    3. In the panel, find the Weight option.
    4. Enter a smaller numerical value or use the down arrow next to the number field to decrease the stroke weight. The weight is typically measured in points (pt).

2. Using the Properties Panel

The Properties panel provides quick access to common settings based on your current selection.

  • Steps:
    1. Select the path(s) or object(s).
    2. Ensure the Properties panel is visible (Window > Properties).
    3. In the Appearance section, locate the Stroke option.
    4. Click the current stroke weight number (e.g., '1 pt') to open a dropdown or input field.
    5. Enter a smaller value or use the controls to reduce the weight.

3. Using the Control Panel (at the top)

The Control panel, usually docked at the top of the workspace, also offers quick stroke options when a path is selected.

  • Steps:
    1. Select the path(s) or object(s).
    2. Look at the top Control panel (if visible, Window > Control).
    3. Find the Stroke Weight field and adjust the value downwards.

Using the Width Tool and Width Profiles

As shown in the reference, Illustrator also allows you to change the thickness of a line along its path using the Width Tool (Shift+W) and applying Width Profiles. This lets you make parts of a line thick and other parts thin.

  • How it works:
    • The Width Tool lets you add and adjust width points directly on a stroke, creating variable thickness.
    • Once you create a variable width stroke, you can save it as a Width Profile.
    • Illustrator also provides pre-defined Width Profiles.
    • By clicking on the width profile option (usually found in the Control panel, Properties panel, or Stroke panel when a variable width stroke is selected), you can select a profile.
    • Choosing a profile that tapers from thick to thin, or has variations, effectively changes the size of the line at different points along its length. You can apply these profiles to any selected path.

Example: Applying a "Thick-to-Thin" profile makes one end of the line wider and the other end narrower, reducing the size towards the thinner end.

Summary Table

Method Location Adjustment Type Use Case
Stroke Panel Window > Stroke Uniform Weight Detailed stroke control
Properties Panel Window > Properties (Appearance) Uniform Weight Quick access
Control Panel Top of workspace (Window > Control) Uniform Weight Quick access
Width Tool/Profiles Toolbar (Shift+W), Panels Variable Thickness Artistic, tapered lines

By using these methods, you can precisely control the size and thickness of lines in your Illustrator artwork.
