Which IM Injection Site Is No Longer Used?

Published in IM injection sites 1 min read

The intramuscular (IM) injection site that is no longer recommended for use is the dorsogluteal site (buttock).

Why the Dorsogluteal Site is No Longer Recommended

Research has indicated that the dorsogluteal site is not the best option for IM injections due to the following reason:

  • Inconsistent Medication Absorption: The body doesn't always absorb medication well from this location.

This can lead to unpredictable therapeutic effects and potentially impact the effectiveness of the administered drug. Therefore, alternative IM injection sites are now preferred.
