How to Use Magic Select in Paint 3D to Remove Background?

Published in Image Editing Software 3 mins read

Paint 3D's Magic Select tool is designed to quickly isolate the main subject of an image from its background, making background removal a straightforward process.

Here's how to use Magic Select in Paint 3D to remove the background:

  1. Open Your Image: Start by opening the image you want to edit in the Paint 3D application.
  2. Activate Magic Select: In the top menu, click on the "Magic Select" tool icon.
  3. Select the Subject: Draw a box or rectangle around the object or person you want to keep in the image. This is the area that Magic Select will analyze to determine the edges of your subject.
  4. Initial Separation: Paint 3D will automatically attempt to detect and separate your subject from the image, much like how it separated the Lemur from the image in the reference. You might see a dashed line appear around the detected object.
  5. Refine the Selection (Optional): If the initial selection isn't perfect, you can use the "Add" or "Remove" tools provided by Magic Select to refine the outline until only your desired subject is selected.
  6. Confirmation: Once you are satisfied with the selection, click the "Done" button. Paint 3D will finalize the separation.
  7. Move the Subject: At this point, your selected subject is a separate element. You can now move it around on the canvas independently from the background.
  8. Select the Background: Now, click on the background area that you want to remove. Ensure the background layer (not the subject) is selected.
  9. Delete the Background: With the background selected, press the Delete key on your keyboard. The background will disappear, leaving only your isolated subject. As seen in the reference, this action results in having the Lemur (or your subject) without the original background.

You are now left with your subject on a transparent background (represented by a checkered pattern), which you can then save as a PNG file to preserve the transparency or place onto a new background.

Summary Table:

Action Tool Used Outcome
Outline Subject Magic Select Defines the area for analysis
Confirm Selection Magic Select Separates subject from background
Click Background Area Pointer Selects the background layer
Press Delete Keyboard Removes the selected background layer

Using Magic Select makes complex selections simple, allowing for quick background removal for various creative projects.
