Select the desired layer: In your image editing software (e.g., Photoshop), locate the layer containing the layer mask you want to adjust in the Layers panel. Click on the layer to select it. Note that you should not select the layer mask thumbnail directly to achieve this effect. You want to adjust the entire layer's opacity.

- Adjusting the layer opacity affects the entire layer, including any content or effects applied to it and the layer mask itself. Black completely hides the layer, white completely reveals it, and shades of gray partially reveal it.
