How do I resize multiple images in Paint?

Published in Image Editing 2 mins read

Unfortunately, standard Paint (the one that comes with Windows) does not have a built-in function to resize multiple images at once. You'll have to resize each image individually using the steps below.

However, if you need to resize multiple images frequently, consider using a different image editing program designed for batch processing. Several free and paid options are available that can significantly speed up the process. Examples include IrfanView, XnConvert, and Batch Image Resizer.

If you must use Paint, here's how to resize a single image:

Resizing an Image in Paint (One at a Time)

  1. Open the Image: Open the image you want to resize in Paint.
  2. Access the Resize Tool: From the Home tab, locate and select the Resize icon (it might also be labeled as "Resize and Skew"). Take note of the original pixel size of your image, often displayed near the bottom of the Paint window.
  3. Set Resize Options:
    • A "Resize and Skew" window will appear.
    • Ensure the "Maintain aspect ratio" checkbox is selected. This keeps the image from becoming distorted by scaling the width and height proportionally.
    • Choose between resizing by Percentage or Pixels. Pixels are generally preferred for setting specific image dimensions.
    • Enter the desired Width or Height. Since "Maintain aspect ratio" is checked, entering one value will automatically adjust the other to keep the image proportional.
  4. Confirm the Resize: Click OK.
  5. Save the Resized Image: Save the image with a new name (File -> Save As) to avoid overwriting the original.

Why batch resizing isn't in Paint: Paint is designed as a basic image editor. Features like batch processing are typically found in more advanced programs geared towards image manipulation and organization.
