How do you apply a layer mask?

Published in Image Editing 1 min read

Applying a layer mask in Photoshop permanently merges the mask with the layer, essentially making the mask part of the layer's content. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Select the layer you want to apply the mask to.
  2. Right-click on the layer mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.
  3. Choose the option "Apply Layer Mask".

This will permanently merge the mask with the layer, removing the mask thumbnail from the Layers panel and making the masked areas part of the layer's content.

Example: If you have a layer with a photo of a person and a layer mask applied to hide the background, applying the mask will permanently remove the background and leave only the person on the layer.

Note: Once the mask is applied, you can no longer edit it independently. You can, however, undo the action immediately if you want to retain the mask for further adjustments.
