How to Outline an Image in Microsoft Paint?

Published in Image Editing 2 mins read

To outline an image in Microsoft Paint, you can use a shape tool from the Home tab and adjust its thickness. Here's a step-by-step guide:

Steps to Outline an Image in Microsoft Paint:

  1. Open Microsoft Paint: Launch the Paint application on your computer.

  2. Insert the Image:

    • Click on "File" in the top-left corner.
    • Select "Open" and choose the image you want to outline from your files.
  3. Select a Shape:

    • In the "Home" tab, find the "Shapes" group.
    • Click on the shape tool that best fits the area you want to outline (e.g., Rectangle, Ellipse, Free-form select).
  4. Draw the Shape:

    • Click and drag your mouse pointer to draw the shape around the area you want to outline.
  5. Adjust the Outline Thickness:

    • In the "Home" tab, find the "Size" tool (usually represented by lines of varying thicknesses).
    • Click on the "Size" tool and select your desired outline thickness from the options.
  6. Adjust Outline Color (Optional):

    • In the "Colors" group, select a color for the outline. "Color 1" determines the outline color. Click on the desired color to set it.
  7. Remove Fill (Optional): To only have an outline and no fill color, select the line or shape tool and then choose 'No Fill' under the "Fill" option. Note that this option might not be available for all shapes.

Note: Using the Curve tool or the Free-form select tool gives you more flexibility for outlining complex shapes. With the Free-form select tool, select the area closely, then copy (Ctrl+C) and paste it (Ctrl+V) to create an outline effect.
