How to Resize an Image in Photoshop

Published in Image Resizing 2 mins read

Resizing images in Photoshop is straightforward using two primary methods: Image Size for changing dimensions and resolution, and Free Transform for adjusting layer size.

Method 1: Using Image Size for Overall Image Resizing

This method alters the image's dimensions and resolution, affecting the entire file. This is ideal for changing the overall size of your image, for example, when preparing for print or web use.

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Image > Image Size.
  3. Specify your desired width and height. Constraining proportions (locking the aspect ratio) by clicking the chain link icon prevents distortion.
  4. Adjust the resolution (pixels per inch, or PPI) as needed. Higher resolution means more detail but a larger file size. Common resolutions include 72ppi for web and 300ppi for print.
  5. Click OK to apply the changes.

Method 2: Using Free Transform for Layer Resizing

This method changes the size of a specific layer, leaving the overall canvas size unchanged. This is useful when working with multiple layers and you only need to modify one.

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Select the layer you wish to resize.
  3. Press Ctrl+T (Windows) or Cmd+T (Mac) to activate Free Transform.
  4. Drag the corner handles of the bounding box to resize. Holding Shift maintains the aspect ratio, preventing distortion.
  5. Press Enter (Windows) or Return (Mac) to apply the transformation.

Choosing the Right Method

  • Use Image Size when you need to change the overall dimensions and resolution of the entire image.
  • Use Free Transform to resize individual layers within the image without changing the canvas size.

Additional Tips

  • Always consider the intended use of your image when resizing. Resizing too much can lead to a loss of quality.
  • For maintaining image quality during resizing, consider using resampling methods like Bicubic Smoother (for enlarging) or Bicubic Sharper (for reducing). These are found in the Image Size dialog box.
  • If you need to resize while maintaining specific proportions, always use the chain link icon in the Image Size dialog or hold the Shift key during Free Transform.
