Published in Image Transformation 2 mins read

You can change the transformation of an image in Photoshop by using the Transform tool found in the Edit menu.

Steps to Transform an Image

To change the transformation of an image in Photoshop, follow these steps:

  1. Select the image or layer: Begin by selecting the image or layer you wish to transform in the Layers panel.
  2. Access the Transform menu: Go to the Edit menu at the top of the Photoshop interface.
  3. Select Transform: From the dropdown menu, click on Transform.
  4. Choose your transformation: A submenu will appear with various transformation options.
    • Scale: Resizes the image.
    • Rotate: Turns the image on its axis.
    • Skew: Slants or distorts the image horizontally or vertically.
    • Distort: Allows you to move corners and edges freely.
    • Perspective: Simulates a perspective view of the image.
    • Warp: Distorts the image using a grid.
    • Rotate 180°: Rotates the image by 180 degrees.
    • Rotate 90° CW: Rotates the image 90 degrees clockwise.
    • Rotate 90° CCW: Rotates the image 90 degrees counterclockwise.
    • Flip Horizontal: Flips the image horizontally.
    • Flip Vertical: Flips the image vertically.
  5. Adjust the Transformation: Once you select a transformation (excluding the fixed rotation or flip options), a bounding box will appear around your selected layer.
    • Handles: Use the handles on the bounding box to adjust the image by dragging them.
    • Rotation: Move your cursor outside the bounding box to see a curved arrow, which you can use to rotate the image.
  6. Apply or Cancel Transformation: Press Enter (or Return) to apply the transformation or Esc to cancel the changes.

Specific Transformation Types

  • Fixed Rotations and Flips: If you choose Rotate 180°, Rotate 90° CW, Rotate 90° CCW, Flip Horizontal, or Flip Vertical, Photoshop will automatically apply these transformations without any user input using a bounding box.

Example

For example, if you want to scale an image, you would:

  • Select the image layer.
  • Go to Edit > Transform > Scale.
  • Drag the handles on the bounding box to resize it.
  • Press Enter to apply the changes.

This process allows for a great deal of control over how your images are displayed and aligned.
