What age is DPT vaccine given?

Published in Immunizations 1 min read

The DPT vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough), is typically given in a series of five shots during childhood.

Here is the recommended schedule:

  • 2 months old
  • 4 months old
  • 6 months old
  • 15 to 18 months old
  • 4 to 6 years old (before school entry)

A booster dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis) is recommended for adolescents at age 11 or 12.

Important Notes:

  • The fifth dose of DTaP is not necessary if the fourth dose was given at age 4 years or older.
  • If a child aged 7 years or older has an incomplete history of DTaP, they should receive Tdap as the catch-up dose.
  • For infants needing rapid protection, the first dose of DTaP-IPV-Hib or DTaP-HB-IPV-Hib can be given as early as 6 weeks of age.

Remember to follow your healthcare provider's recommendations regarding your child's immunization schedule.
