How do you separate audio from video in iMovie?

Published in iMovie Audio Separation 2 mins read

Separating audio from video in iMovie is a straightforward process that allows you to manipulate the sound independently of the picture.

To detach audio from a video clip in iMovie, you simply need to use the built-in "Detach Audio" function.

Steps to Detach Audio

Follow these simple steps to separate the audio track from your video clip in iMovie:

  1. In the iMovie timeline, select the video clip from which you want to separate the audio.
  2. Go to the Modify menu at the top of the screen.
  3. From the dropdown menu, choose Detach Audio.

Alternatively, you can use a keyboard shortcut for a quicker method:

  • With the video clip selected in the timeline, press Option-Command-B.

What Happens After Detaching Audio

Once you choose Detach Audio or use the keyboard shortcut:

  • The audio is removed from the video clip itself.
  • The audio track appears as a separate audio-only clip.
  • This new audio clip is attached below the original video clip in the timeline.
  • The detached audio clip will be easily identifiable by a green bar at the top.

This separated audio clip is now independent. You can:

  • Move it along the timeline.
  • Attach it to any other clip in your movie project.
  • Move it down to the dedicated background music well.

This gives you flexibility to edit the sound (like deleting it, adjusting its volume, or adding effects) without affecting the video portion, or synchronize it with different video clips.
