How do I extract a video from iMovie?

Published in iMovie Export 2 mins read

To extract a video from iMovie, you need to share or export your project as a file. Here's how:

  1. Select Your Project: In the Projects browser within iMovie, locate the project you want to extract.

  2. Share Project:

    • Click the "More" button (often represented by three dots) on the project thumbnail.
    • Choose "Share Project". Alternatively, with the project open, navigate to File > Share > File... in the top menu.
  3. Adjust Export Settings (Important!) A window will appear allowing you to customize your export settings:

    • Title: Rename your video file.
    • Description: Add a description (optional).
    • Tags: Add tags for organization (optional).
    • Format: Choose between "Video and Audio" (standard) or "Audio Only".
    • Resolution: Select the desired resolution for your video. Higher resolution means larger file size. Common choices include 720p, 1080p, and 4K. Consider your intended use when selecting.
    • Quality: Choose the quality. "High" is generally a good balance between quality and file size.
    • Compress: Choose a compression option. "Better Quality" is typically recommended.
    • Advanced: This section might offer options for faster encoding or preserving transparency (if applicable).
  4. Save Your Video:

    • Click "Next...".
    • Choose a location on your computer to save the video file.
    • Click "Save".

iMovie will then begin exporting your video project. The export time depends on the length and complexity of your project, as well as your chosen export settings. A progress indicator will show the export status.

Once the export is complete, your video file will be saved in the location you selected.
