How to Change the Order of Animations in InDesign?

Published in InDesign Animation 3 mins read

You can change the order of animations in InDesign simply by dragging the animated objects in the Animation panel.

Understanding Animation Order in InDesign

Adobe InDesign allows you to bring your designs to life with interactive animations. When you add animation effects to multiple objects on a page, the Animation panel is your central hub for controlling how and when these animations play back.

The order in which your animations appear is crucial for creating the desired visual sequence. By default, InDesign might list animations based on the order objects were created or selected, but you have full control to rearrange this.

Changing the Animation Playback Sequence

The primary method for controlling the sequence of animations is directly manipulating their position within the Animation panel list.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Open the Animation Panel: Go to Window > Interactive > Animation.
  2. View Animated Objects: The panel lists all objects on the current spread that have an animation applied.
  3. Identify the Objects: Each object is listed, usually by its name (if given in the Layers panel) or its type.
  4. Change the Order: To change the animation order, drag items up and down in the list. Simply click on an object's name in the list and drag it to the desired position. Moving an item higher in the list makes its animation play earlier in the sequence, while moving it lower makes it play later.
  • Tip: Naming your objects clearly in the Layers panel (Window > Layers) before adding animation can make them much easier to identify and reorder in the Animation panel.

Incorporating Animation Delay

While the order determines which animation plays next, you can also introduce pauses between animations or at the start of a specific animation using the delay setting.

According to the reference: To delay animation, select the item, and specify the number of seconds of delay.

Here's how to apply a delay:

  1. Select the Animated Object: Click on the object itself on the page or select its name in the Animation panel list.
  2. Find the Delay Setting: In the Animation panel for the selected object, locate the Delay option.
  3. Specify the Delay: Enter the desired number of seconds you want the animation to wait after its triggering event before it begins.

For example, if you have three items animated in sequence (A, B, C):

Animation Item Order in List Delay Setting Playback Timing
Item A 1st 0 seconds Plays immediately when triggered.
Item B 2nd 0 seconds Plays right after Item A finishes.
Item C 3rd 1 second Waits 1 second after Item B finishes before starting.

By dragging items in the list and adjusting their individual delays, you can fine-tune the timing and sequence of multiple animations on your page, creating dynamic and engaging interactive layouts.
