How do I add a drop shadow in InDesign?

Published in InDesign Effects 4 mins read

You can add a drop shadow in InDesign through the Effects panel or the Properties panel.

Here's how:

Method 1: Using the Properties Panel

  1. Select the Object: Use the Selection tool to select the object (text frame, image, shape, etc.) to which you want to apply the drop shadow.
  2. Open the Properties Panel: If the Properties panel isn't already open, go to Window > Properties.
  3. Access Effects: In the Appearance section of the Properties panel, click the "fx" button (this opens the Transparency and Effects drop-down menu).
  4. Choose Drop Shadow: Select "Drop Shadow" from the drop-down menu. This will open the Effects dialog box.
  5. Adjust Drop Shadow Options: In the Effects dialog box, you can customize the following:
    • Mode: The blending mode for the shadow.
    • Opacity: The transparency of the shadow.
    • X Offset: The horizontal distance of the shadow from the object.
    • Y Offset: The vertical distance of the shadow from the object.
    • Blur: The amount of blur applied to the shadow's edges.
    • Color: The color of the shadow. Click the color swatch to choose a color.
    • Angle: The angle at which the light source is hitting the object, affecting the direction of the shadow.
    • Spread: Controls the density of the shadow. A higher spread makes the shadow more opaque.
    • Size: The overall size of the drop shadow.
    • Noise: Adds grain to the shadow.
    • Object Knocks Out Shadow: When checked, the object itself won't cast a shadow onto itself (useful for overlapping objects).
  6. Preview and Adjust: Make sure the "Preview" box is checked so you can see the effects of your adjustments in real-time. Adjust the settings until you achieve the desired look.
  7. Click OK: Once you're satisfied with the drop shadow, click "OK" to apply the effect.

Method 2: Using the Effects Panel

  1. Select the Object: Use the Selection tool to select the object you want to affect.
  2. Open the Effects Panel: Go to Window > Effects. If the Effects panel is nested, you may need to expand it or choose the "Effects" option specifically.
  3. Select the Type of Effect: From the Effects panel menu (the small icon in the top-right corner of the panel), ensure "Object" is selected if you are trying to apply the effect to the entire object. If you want to apply the effect to the stroke or fill separately, choose "Stroke" or "Fill," respectively.
  4. Add Drop Shadow: Click on "Drop Shadow" in the Effects panel. This will apply a default drop shadow.
  5. Adjust Drop Shadow Options: The Effects panel directly exposes the drop shadow settings, allowing you to customize the Mode, Opacity, X Offset, Y Offset, Blur, Color, Angle, Distance, Spread, and Size, similar to Method 1. Remember to check the "Preview" box to see the changes.

Tips for Creating Effective Drop Shadows:

  • Subtlety is Key: Often, less is more. A subtle drop shadow can be more effective than a dramatic one.
  • Consider Lighting: Think about the light source in your design and adjust the angle of the shadow accordingly.
  • Use Realistic Colors: A dark gray or brown often looks more natural than pure black for a drop shadow.
  • Experiment with Blending Modes: Try different blending modes to achieve unique shadow effects.
  • Consistency: Use consistent drop shadow settings throughout your document for a cohesive look.

By using either the Properties Panel or the Effects panel, you can easily add and customize drop shadows in InDesign, enhancing the visual appeal and depth of your designs.
