How to Hide Lines in InDesign?

Published in InDesign Guides and Grids 2 mins read

To hide lines in InDesign, you typically hide non-printing elements like guides or grids that help you align objects on your page.

In InDesign, "lines" you might want to hide are usually visual aids such as guides or grids. These elements are visible on screen while you work but do not appear in the final printed or exported document.

Hiding Different Types of Visual Lines

InDesign offers easy ways to toggle the visibility of these helpful, non-printing lines.

Hiding Guides

Guides are lines you pull from the rulers (horizontal or vertical) to help with precise placement and alignment.

  • Via Menu: Go to View > Grids & Guides > Hide Guides.
  • Using a Shortcut: Press Cmd + ; (Mac) or Ctrl + ; (Windows). Pressing the shortcut again will show the guides.

Hiding Grids

InDesign has two main types of grids: the Document Grid and the Baseline Grid.

Hiding the Baseline Grid

The Baseline Grid helps align text baselines across columns and frames.

  • Via Menu: Go to View > Grids & Guides > Hide Baseline Grid.
  • Reference Confirmation: As per the reference, you can Go to View | Grids & Guides | Hide/Show Baseline Grid and toggle them off.

Hiding the Document Grid

The Document Grid is a customizable grid of lines or dots covering the page, useful for general layout.

  • Via Menu: Go to View > Grids & Guides > Hide Document Grid.

Summary Table

Type of "Line" How to Hide (Menu) Shortcut (Toggle Show/Hide)
Guides View > Grids & Guides > Hide Guides Cmd + ; / Ctrl + ;
Baseline Grid View > Grids & Guides > Hide Baseline Grid Cmd + Option + ' / Ctrl + Alt + ' (often requires customization)
Document Grid View > Grids & Guides > Hide Document Grid Cmd + ' / Ctrl + '

Hiding these visual aids allows you to see your design without the clutter of layout lines, giving you a clear view of the final output.
