You can create guides in InDesign by dragging them from the rulers or using the Layout menu.
Creating Guides by Dragging from Rulers
This is the most common and intuitive way to create guides.
- Ensure Rulers are Visible: If the rulers aren't visible, go to View > Show Rulers (or press Ctrl/Cmd + R).
- Drag from the Ruler:
- Horizontal Guide: Click and drag from the horizontal ruler at the top of the document.
- Vertical Guide: Click and drag from the vertical ruler on the left side of the document.
- Position the Guide: Drag the guide to the desired location on the page or spread. As you drag, InDesign will display the guide's position numerically.
- Release the Mouse: Release the mouse button to place the guide.
Important Considerations:
- Page Guides vs. Spread Guides: If you start dragging the guide from the ruler and drop it onto the pasteboard (the area surrounding the document pages), the guide will span the entire pasteboard and spread. If you later drag this guide onto a page, it will become a page guide. Page guides exist only on that specific page, while spread guides span the entire spread.
- Moving Guides: You can move guides after you create them using the Selection tool (black arrow). Click and drag the guide to its new position.
- Locking Guides: To prevent accidental movement, you can lock guides by going to View > Grids & Guides > Lock Guides.
- Deleting Guides: Select a guide with the Selection tool and press the Delete key, or drag it back onto the ruler from which it originated.
Creating Guides Using the Layout Menu
This method provides more precise control over guide placement.
- Go to Layout > Create Guides: This opens the "Create Guides" dialog box.
- Specify Rows and Columns:
- Rows: Enter the number of horizontal guides you want to create.
- Columns: Enter the number of vertical guides you want to create.
- Set the Gutter:
- Gutter: Specify the space between the guides.
- Fit Guides To: Choose whether to fit the guides to the page or the margins.
- Remove Existing Ruler Guides: Check this option to delete any existing guides before creating the new ones.
- Preview: Check the "Preview" box to see how the guides will appear before applying the settings.
- Click OK: The guides will be created according to your specifications.
Guide Behavior
- Guides are Non-Printing: Guides are for layout assistance and will not appear in the printed or exported output.
- Snapping to Guides: By default, objects will "snap" to guides when you move or create them, making it easier to align elements precisely. You can toggle this behavior on/off by going to View > Grids & Guides > Snap to Guides.
In conclusion, InDesign offers flexible ways to create guides, either by dragging from rulers for quick placement or using the Layout menu for more controlled configurations. Understanding the difference between page and spread guides is essential for effective layout design.
