How do I import an InDesign File into InDesign?

Published in InDesign Import 2 mins read

To import an InDesign file into another InDesign file, you essentially place it, treating it like an image or other supported file type. Here's how:

  1. Open the Target Document: First, open the InDesign document where you want to import the other InDesign file.

  2. Place Command: Go to File > Place (or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+D on Windows or ⌘+D on Mac).

  3. Select the InDesign File: In the Place dialog box that appears, navigate to the InDesign file you want to import and select it.

  4. Show Import Options (Optional but Recommended): Before clicking "Open," make sure the "Show Import Options" checkbox at the bottom of the Place dialog box is selected. This gives you control over how the InDesign file is imported.

  5. Import Options Dialog: If you selected "Show Import Options," an Import Options dialog box will appear. Here, you can customize the import:

    • Page Selection: Choose which pages of the InDesign file you want to import.
    • Crop Options: Select how the imported content should be cropped. Options include Media, Bleed, Crop, Art.
    • Transparency: Manage transparency settings if applicable.
  6. Click OK: Click "OK" in the Import Options dialog box to confirm your settings.

  7. Place the Content: Your cursor will now be loaded with the InDesign content. Click on the page where you want to place it. You can also click and drag to define the size of the placed content.

Important Considerations:

  • Links: When you place an InDesign file, it creates a link to the original file. This means that if you update the original InDesign file, the placed instance in your document will also update (if the link is active). You can manage links via the Links panel (Window > Links).
  • Layers: Imported layers from the placed InDesign file will be added to your document as a group.
  • Text Flow: If you want the text from the imported InDesign file to flow automatically into your document, make sure you have a text frame selected before using the Place command.
